Alice in Wonderland – Down the Hole – Costume Replica

“….In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again….” ~ Lewis Carroll

I guess you could say that I acted quite similar to Alice – following the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole – when deciding to make this dress….

It all started when my sister and sister-in-law began talking of throwing an un-birthday party, using a blended theme of “Alice in Wonderland” and Steampunk, aka Alice in Steampunkland. 🙂

I had never seen any of the “Alice in Wonderland” movies (this included the 1951 cartoon starring Kathryn Beaumont, and the live-action version and it’s sequel, starring Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, and Anne Hathaway)

I hadn’t even seen any photos of it until….party planning!  Once I saw the blue dress (nicknamed the Down the Hole Dress) from the 2010 version, I was quite surprised with how much I liked it.

That’s all it took for me to decide to make the dress. Call me “mad’… but I’ll tell you a secret, all the best of us are. 😉

Then came hours of research along with hours of sewing.  I got it finished just in time for the party and it t’was a grand tea party!

I’ve posted Part 1 of the “in-detail” posts on this dress featuring process photos of the bodice, as well as bodice information.

Thanks to my sister and her photography skills (visit her website at SmileForSophie.com) for taking these awesome photos!

Considering these gloves where made in the car, on the way to the photo shoot, I think they turned out well!

If you noticed, I look a little a bit pale in some of these photos, this wasn’t make-up, or editing! Believe it or not it was in the teens during this photoshoot! Ya, it was cold!!! Brrrrrrrr……

Unfortunately, this is the only photo we got of the back of the dress… after the dress was quite wrinkled!

Alice, will you have a spot of tea?

Ah, yes, the embroidery! Featuring squirrels, birds, bunnies, deers, and flowers.  Tracing the embroidery design took some time, but it was well worth it!  I used my Brother Embroidery Machine which was purchased for this project (yes, you read correctly, I bought an embroidery machine just for this project… but that’s a story for another post…

I just had to try the “Alice” pose. Did it work? (original photo below)

Well, that’s the end! I hope you had an enjoyable time in the Land of Wonderland…

This dress has a Pinterest Board full of photos!

One more thing, my handy, dandy brother has a videography business and took videos during the shoot, and he’s put together a video!
